Superman Returns or Does He?

After several years of hiatus on the big screen the man in the blue tights returns to face his archnemesis, Lex Luther and save(as always) his true love, Lois Lane from climatic and unexpected dangers. I have to admit that I did over-hyped the movie. I was expecting way more action. I mean, this is Superman.

By the way, this movie is loosely based on the first Superman movies. This is important in establishing well-known facts and future facts.

This is the story...Superman returns to Earth after 5 years to find his Kyptonian Home, which we all know has been blown up. Okay, we knew that and he knew that, but he still traveled to see it? That doesn't make sense. The story continues... When he returns to Earth, he gets his old job back at the Daily Bugle(wasn't that Peter Parker/Spiderman?) he finds that Lois Lane is doing a story for the paper about a new takeoff process for a shuttle. It malfunctions, of course, and Superman to the rescue. This scene was pretty amazing. The awkward scene follows with Lois staring at Superman in disbelief that he's back.

In the meanwhile, Lex Luthor cooks up a scheme to take over the Earth by controlling the Earth's oil supply. Opps, wrong person. Let's try this again. Lex Luther cooks up a scheme to take over the Earth by creating artificial landmasses using Krytoinian technology crystals. It is feasible, but nonetheless a stretch.

Then comes Superman to save the day and then a big twist happens: Lois Lane has a son. How did that happen? Just watch Superman 2 and all of it will make sense.

Overall, the movie is wonderfully made. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor is genius. The other characters including the 6'4, 220, muscular dude in the cape and tights play their parts well. The action sequences, as little as they are, are cool and exciting. The only flaw is lack of a real villain scheme and action sequences. I hope that this movie is only the beginning of a new series of Superman movies...with more action and less romancy stuff.
